History of Universal College of Beauty
Founded in 1929 by Hazel D. Williams, Universal College of Beauty has stood as a proud beacon of excellence, empowerment, and opportunity for nearly a century. Inspired by the legacy of Madam C.J. Walker, Hazel established the school to offer beauty education to African American students during a time when they were systematically denied access to training elsewhere. Her vision created not only pathways to careers in beauty but also a legacy of generational pride, entrepreneurship, and community service.
Located in the heart of Los Angeles and deeply connected to the culture and spirit of Leimert Park, Universal College of Beauty has educated and empowered thousands of students across cosmetology, barbering, and esthetics programs. Today, the school is proudly owned and operated by Kenneth and Belinda Williams—the grandson and granddaughter-in-law of founder Hazel D. Williams. With daily leadership from their daughter, Jasmine Williams, who serves as the School Director, Universal continues to uphold its founding mission while embracing the future of beauty education.
Throughout its history, Universal has remained committed to high standards of professionalism, creativity, and care. The school has been a launchpad for many beauty professionals and entrepreneurs who are making their mark locally and globally. With strategic partnerships—including a dynamic relationship with Beyoncé’s BEYGOOD and CECRED initiatives—Universal continues to expand its impact, offering scholarships, training opportunities, and a platform for students to shine.
As we approach our 100th year, Universal College of Beauty stands as more than a beauty school—it is a cultural institution, a home for excellence, and a testament to what’s possible when passion, purpose, and community come together.
